Sweden during the Cold War:
About me:
Sten Ottosson, holds a
PhD. in History from Uppsala University, Sweden, 2000. The title of my
dissertation is Den (o)moraliska neutraliteten. Tre politikers och tre
tidningars moraliska värdering av svensk utrikespolitik 1945-1952,
[(Im)moral Neutrality. Three Politicians’ and Three Newspaper Editors’ Moral
Assessment of Swedish Foreign Policy 1945-1952]. The dissertation is written in
Swedish, with an English abstract. You can purchase the
dissertation from my publisher Santérus förlag. The
dissertation studies norms and values in the Swedish foreign policy debate
during the early Cold war years. The main focus is on the evaluation of the
neutral policy.
My primary research interests are: Swedish foreign policy during
the 20th century, Cold war history and Contemporary history.
I am currently working on a study of the Swedish self-image
during the Cold war. This project will analyse the image of Sweden among the
most important decision-makers, among politicians, in the common debate and
among the citizens. In the study I will apply and test theories of collective
identity. A presentation of this project has been published in the report
Svensk självbild under kalla kriget. En studie av stats- och
utrikesministrarnas bild av Sverige 1950-89 [Swedish Self-Image During the
Cold War. A Study of the Prime- and Foreign Ministers Image of Sweden 1950-89].
This report is published
by The
Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
For those
interested in Swedish foreign policy during the cold war, but not able to read
Swedish, I have some suggested readings. All recommended books and articles are
in English.
